Jason Craft makes natural marble cheese boards, trays, mortars, cake stands, turned pedestals and décor there with craftsmen who have decades on this stone, and work that takes a month elsewhere can ship out of Hualien in a week.
Blocks are sawn into slabs, cut or turned to shape, then ground and polished by hand. Because the quarry, the saws, the lathes and the finishers are all in the same area, a sample or a repeat order does not wait on stone from far away. The veining comes out of the ground, not out of a process, so no two pieces are alike — which is also why stone selection has to be agreed up front.
